In the heart of West Pokot, there was a place where many people had almost given up on hope. The land was dry and covered with bushes. Clean water was hard to find, and children spent their days helping their families instead of going to school. For many of these children, education was something they had only heard about. They had never stepped into a classroom.
Everything began to change with one simple act of kindness.
The Ujamaa Alumni Organization through Kinship United drilled a borehole for this forgotten community. It was more than just a source of clean water. It became the beginning of a new future.
Water brought life. Families no longer had to spend hours searching for water. Children became healthier. Hope slowly replaced despair. As people gathered around the borehole, a new dream was born: a school where every child could learn.
Today, where there was once only bush, there is now an “Oasis of Hope.” A name we have given to our school.
The school has become a safe place where children laugh, learn, and dream. Boys and girls who had never attended school now wake up excited to go to class every morning. They enjoy learning so much that they are disappointed when Friday comes because they have to return home for the weekend. For children who once had no classroom, school has become their favorite place.
The project has also created jobs within the community. Five dedicated teachers now guide the children every day. Four other staff members – a watchman, a cleaner, a secretary, and another support worker – help keep the school running smoothly. Their work strengthens the local economy while serving the children.
Education is only part of the story. The school also cares for the children’s hearts and character. Twice every week, a local Pokot pastor visits the school to teach God’s Word. These lessons encourage love, honesty, forgiveness, and respect. They help children grow into responsible young people who can build a peaceful future.
West Pokot has often been known for conflict and cattle raids. For many years, poverty, isolation, and a lack of opportunities have made life difficult for many families. But this community is much more than the struggles it has faced. It is full of hardworking parents who want a better future for their children. They simply lacked the opportunities that many others take for granted.
This project is proving that lasting peace begins with opportunity. Every child sitting in a classroom is one more child discovering a future beyond violence. Every lesson learned is another step toward breaking the cycle of poverty. Every drop of clean water reminds the community that change is possible.
What started with one borehole has become a movement of transformation. Water gave birth to a school. The school is raising educated children. Those children will become teachers, nurses, pastors, business owners, and leaders who will one day transform their own community.
But the journey is far from over.
Many more children still need classrooms, books, meals, and opportunities to learn. The school needs more resources to continue growing and serving this community. With faithful partners and generous donors, this oasis can continue to flourish.
When you invest in this project, you are not simply building a school. You are changing lives. You are giving children an education, families hope, and an entire community the chance to write a new story.
One borehole changed everything.
I believe together we can create more life springs in this Oasis.
